Behavior Problems and Workplace Violence

This inservice has been designed for long term care nursing assistants, CNA's, and home health aides to describe behavior problems common to elderly populations. Causes, risk factors, potential problems, goals, and interventions are outlined for the behavior problems of wandering, lack of smoking safety awareness, manipulative behaviors, socially inappropriate behaviors, and abusive behaviors. Safety instructions are given to protect residents, clients, and staff members from workplace violence and injury.

Objectives

On completion of this course, the participant will be able to: 

  1. List six common behavior problems. 
  2. Explain causes, risks, and potential problems related to wandering. 
  3. Describe four interventions to prevent wandering. 
  4. List the steps to take when a resident or client is missing. 
  5. Outline practices to assist residents and clients to smoke safely.

  8. Describe the potential risks of abusive and socially inappropriate behaviors.

  11. Outline the steps to take when a resident or client becomes agitated. 
  12. List three steps to help protect against workplace violence.
