Preventing Resident Abuse

This inservice has been designed for nursing assistants, CNA's, and home health aides caring for patients in the long term care or home health care setting. The primary responsibility of health care workers is to promote the highest possible well-being of residents and clients. Facilities and agencies must assure that staff members have been educated in abuse prevention, and must report all incidences of abuse to regulatory agencies. Educating staff members about what constitutes abuse and what behavior must be prevented and reported is crucial to assuring resident and client well-being and safety.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Explain the legal definition of abuse.
  2. List and define the five main types of abuse.
  3. Give four examples of each type of abuse.
  4. Identify signs and symptoms of each kind of abuse.
  5. List three triggers of abusive behavior.
  6. Explain two ways to prevent abusive behavior.
  7. Describe when and how to report suspected abuse.
