Doctor Advocates Whole Person Care
Doctor Advocates “Whole-Person” Care

It has only been 20 years since the first required medical school course was offered on the topic of spirituality and health.  It was pioneered by Christina Puchalski at George Washington University.  Today almost all medical schools have such courses, but nurses and health care workers still feel ill-prepared to venture into areas of spirituality and faith when it comes to caring for patients.
Nurses may feel inadequate and say that they don’t have a background in religion, theology, or philosophy.  We do not need to be experts on spirituality.  We just have to be sensitive and aware of our patients in spiritual distress, and to see the patient as a whole.  When delivering whole-person care, a patient in spiritual distress should not suffer alone.  There are chaplains available in hospitals, and referrals to clergy need to become part of our patient’s support system.  Our patients need more than just access to disease management; they need to be seen as a whole being, including their spiritual dimension.
