Hospice Care Improves Quality of Life and Lowers Costs

Too many older Americans use the Emergency Department nearing the end of life, rather than hospice care.
Too many older Americans use the Emergency Department nearing the end of life, rather than hospice care.  The traditional focus of the Emergency Department is triage and stabilization, not end-of-life care.  Most patients prefer to die at home, surrounded by the comforts and memories of home and their loved ones.  Hospice care, on the other hand, is free to everyone enrolled in Medicare, and centers on the treatment and relief of symptoms that are common near the end of life, such as pain, nausea, shortness of breath, and confusion.  Additionally, the majority of hospice care is provided in the patient’s home.
