Hospitals Ill Equipped to Care for Dementia Patients
Study by British Nursing Students Found Hospitals Ill Equipped to Care For Dementia Patients

A recent group of nursing students in the United Kingdom found that hospitals are ill equipped to handle the needs of patients suffering with dementia.  The students reported that nurses described feeling out of touch with their demented population, and had trouble understanding their basic needs, such as nutrition.
The culture of acute care hospitals focuses on efficiently delivering physical care to patients, and does not slow down enough to be able to provide adequate and supportive care to those suffering with dementia.  The students reported that dementia patients were unable to walk freely around the hospital, that the busy units were frightening for the patients to cope with, workers struggled to provide proper amounts of nutrition to dementia patients, and that time constraints meant some dementia patients were helped last at mealtimes.  The nursing students also felt a lack of guidance from the hospital staff as to adequate strategies for delivering care to this population.

The authors of the study, published in Nursing Older People, suggest that these obstacles could be overcome through increased dementia education for hospital staff, and the development of dementia-friendly hospitals.  To read the full article: CLICK HERE.
